My first beat as a freshman college sports reporter for Drake University’s newspaper, The Times-Delphic, was the women’s volleyball team. The largest crowd I ever saw at one of their games was around 11.
Last night, the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers set a new global record for attendance at a women’s sports event by packing 92,003 people into the school’s football stadium to watch its women’s volleyball team, surpassing the world record of 91,648 fans set at a Champions League game in Barcelona in 2022.
All this proves is that, yes, there are actually more things to do in Iowa than Nebraska.
Mitch McConnell went all Zombie Mode again yesterday. “John, you’re being insensitive to a person with a medical condition.” No I’m not. I’m being critical of the doddering old men who run this supposedly great country and are so addicted to the power and money that comes with it that they will gladly continue to go up in front of cameras and make fools of themselves rather than retire and let people whose brains aren’t turning into jelly in front of our eyes step forward.
To that end, there’s this statistic: Seventy-seven percent of U.S. adults in a recent Associated Press poll said they think Great Grandpa Joe Biden, age 80, is too old to run for a second term. I heartily agree with them.
My Midwest Rebels 14U team took to the field in an actual game for the first time yesterday. We let up four runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits and lost 4-3. To say we had first-game jitters is an understatement. That first inning was ugly, with a hit batter, error and a few questionable fielding plays.
After that, we were golden. We let up no hits and no runs in the next four frames, but our rally fell short. We had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth but couldn’t push the tying run across, and then we had the tying run on second with two outs in the last inning before a groundout to third ended things.
Bummer. But I’m proud of the boys and see a lot of great things happening for us now that we have those nerves out of our system.
