Something I’m looking forward to today: A nap and playoff baseball.

Something I’m looking forward to in the next seven days: Mayhap going to my first Yankees playoff game ever.

Something I’m grateful for from yesterday: An amazingly fun time at the Staind/Breaking Benjamin concert. I still smell like weed.

What I’m writing: Yesterday’s Two Crappy Pages involved the start of a draft of a story about how to develop insurance products in Latin America.

What I’ve written: Using AI for Accurate Information: Kartikeya Vats applies what he learned in the MSAI program to his job at Target, ensuring what the company’s website says is on the shelves matches actual inventory.

I grew up about an hour’s drive away from the OG Yankee Stadium and learned the route well throughout my childhood. It was easy and cheap to go to a Yankees game back then. The team was horrible and it was commonplace for me and either some friends or a girlfriend to roll up a half-hour before gametime and get two tickets for less than $20, total.

When I tell people here in Missourah I’m a Yankees fan, I see the looks on their faces. “You frontrunner,” they silently judge (not Aaron), and so I explain, “Yes, the Yankees have been a good and sometimes great baseball team for much of the past 25 years, but they weren’t when I was a kid.

Consider this: For the main chunk of my childhood — 1980 to 1992 — the Yankees finished first in the AL East just once (1980, and lost in the ALCS), and from 1987 onward they never finished higher than fourth. When I bolted NY for Iowa, things were ugly. In 1990, the team finished 67-95, good for DFL in the AL East and the worst record in the American League. My last Opening Day as a New Yorker, a friend and I skipped school and went to the Stadium to watch the Yankees defeat Roger Clemens and the hated Boston Red Sox. It was one of just 76 wins that season.

And then they got good.

From 1993 to 2010, they finished no worse than third in the AL East (2008), appeared in the playoffs every year except 1993 and 2008, won seven World Series and had a combined record of 1,697 and 1,148. I witnessed none of that in person at the Stadium, catching only a handful of games when interleague play started …

… or at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium.

Now, my hope is with those Royals to catch my first New York Yankees playoff game.

My home is a baseball house divided. Wifey Poo is a Cardinals fan. They suck. Boy The Younger is an Orioles fan because for one year while we lived in Florida he played on a Little League team of that name. Boy The Elder is a Royals fan. My attempts at keeping him a Yankees fan were lambasted by my brother-in-law, with whom we went to several Royals-Yankees games.

When the paint finally dried on this year’s playoff picture, BTY’s Orioles were paired with BTE’s Royals, and awaiting the winner are my New York Yankees.

You could see the lightbulb go off over my head.

I now am in possession (digitally) of two tickets for Game 3 of the potential Yankees-Royals ALDS matchup in Kansas City. The game would be played a week from today … if.

The Royals have to beat the Orioles. Yesterday, they took care of business, with a 1-0 dub. They can kindly do something similar today. Bossman has already OK’d my PTO for the possible matchup.

And so I sit, Yankees gear in my closet, ready. After all these years, all the losses I witnessed from the Yankee Stadium stands, please … please let this be the year I make it to my first Yankees playoff game.
