Something I’m looking forward to today: A mental resilience seminar I organized for my baseball team.

Something I’m looking forward to in the next seven days: A three-day weekend.

Something I’m grateful for from yesterday: See above whiskey gratefulness.

What I’m writing: Yesterday’s Two Crappy Pages involved a draft for a story for my day job that will be translated into Japanese and run in a Japanese insurance publication. It’s about the reasons to transfer pension risk to an insurer. It boggles my mind that stuff I write will appear in Japanese in Japan.

What I’ve written: Open up and say … News Nuggies! Today we look at Mark Zuckerberg being weird, sad cigarettes, a new travel hotspot, how Muricans will do anything to avoid the metric system, and yet another weird food combo. Get your twice-weekly dose of Vitamin NN, right now.

I am extremely grateful for the ability to work from home four days a week. Don’t get me wrong: I like my co-workers and I’m lonely as hell not having work friends like I used to. But WFH has its perks.

Perks like what? Good question. Perks like this: If I were to die at my at-home desk, someone would likely notice I was dead before all that long. That wasn’t the case for 60-year-old Denise Prudhomme. Denise clocked in at Wells Fargo in Tempe, Ariz., at 7 a.m. Friday. Four days later, employees who came into the office noticed an odor, but they attributed it to bad plumbing.

Yeah, that was a dead Denise, who had abandoned her earthly vessel, as the preachers would say it, four days before.

In the wake of this, newscasters attributed the lack of recognition that there was a freaking dead body in the office to the WFH culture. Not as many people go into the office anymore, they said. And, of course, there was the weekend.

But how sad is it that a 60-year-old woman could die at her workstation and no one would miss her until she started to stink up the joint? The whole weekend went by, and no one was there to say, “Hey. Where’s Denise?” That makes my heart incredibly sad, and I think it’s more of a sign of how lonely and isolated we are as a society than the WFH culture itself. WFH might be contributing to the problem, but it’s not the disease.

RIP, Denise. You deserved better.
