Something I’m looking forward to today: Our end-of-the-year awards celebration and party for the baseball team.

Something I’m looking forward to in the next seven days: I turn 50 a week from today. I think I’m looking forward to that. But not really. Ugh.

Something I’m grateful for from yesterday: Seeing the joy on my mother-in-law’s face because of how amazing Wifey Poo is.

What I’m writing: Yesterday’s two crappy pages involved writing a story for a Johnny Boy Marketing client about a guy who’s working for a startup attempting to incorporate machine learning and artificial intelligence into hearing aids.

What I’ve written: The Hum Is Real

If you’re fortunate, certain things will happen over the course of a long marriage that will remind you of why you chose the person you did to spend the rest of your life with. Yesterday, one of those certain things happened.

Wifey Poo and I have been married more than 27 years now and have known each other more than three decades. This is sometimes impossible to fathom, but it’s also true. When we met, there was absolutely no thought that we would be each other’s forever. We were simply two dumb college freshmen who liked to talk with each other who then happened to fall in love after weeding our way through a really weird love square that was more like a soap opera than a romance.

My mother-in-law’s 83rd birthday is coming up next week. Wifey Poo, who loves to say she isn’t creative, thought of an idea one recent day while schlepping Boy The Younger hither and yon to celebrate the occasion.

What The Judester loves most (besides her first and favorite son-in-law, of course) are her grandchildren, a number that recently swelled by one with the addition of her first grandchild-in-law, DIL. So Wifey Poo conceptualized, organized and executed a plan to have each and every grandchild show up at her apartment yesterday.

BTY went in first, having called her earlier this week to say he was going to come see her to play cards. As far as The Judester knew, he was the only one she would see yesterday.

Five minutes later, the next grandchild went in, this one bearing balloons. Then, a few minutes later, the next grandchild appeared, holding flowers. One by one, each grandchild appeared, each with a small token of their love, until The Judester was surrounded by all eight grandkids.

That everyone’s schedule worked for a day is both a minor miracle and a testament to the love shared in my in-law family. There wasn’t a thought in any of the grandchildren’s minds to miss this opportunity to get together and show our matriarch some love.

Wifey Poo has done so much for The Judester in the make of her dad’s death in 2021, and much of it goes unnoticed and unheralded by anyone else, especially those not in the immediate vicinity. To see the joy on The Judester’s face yesterday and to hear her declare it, “The best day ever” is all the reward or recognition Wifey Poo needs, and she doesn’t really even care for that.

Wifey Poo arranged everything to make yesterday special. She coordinated the timing, the gifts being brought into The Judester, even the food for lunch so they could all have a meal while they collectively played a card game. Aside from being sneaky-creative, Wifey Poo is exceedingly kind and loving, and she’ll do things like this for the people she cares about. It comes naturally to her, and it’s been amazing to witness over the course of the past three decades.

I tried to tell her last night that she doesn’t realize how special she is, that the world doesn’t have enough of the simply kind human beings like her. She deflects. Demurs. That’s part of her makeup, too.

But like I said, there are moments in marriage that, if you’re lucky, will remind you why you chose the person you did. Yesterday was one such moment, and it was fun to see.
