What does Cuba, Uranus, Sleeper, Doolittle and a billboard saying “If we don’t return to 2 Chronicles, than were finished” have in common?

They all were on the route from my Humble Rural Missourah Home to the cabin in the boonies of Arkansas that is my home away from home for a few days. There also was the winner of a billboard that said “If you’re not drinking Flynn water, well, you awter” and another billboard for “PMS Boat Sales,” which, I imagine, has really bad customer service once a month.

Oh, and there were multiple billboards encouraging me to stop at the home of the World’s Largest Belt Buckle.

I didn’t, and I know that, at some point in my life, I’m going to regret that.

The Butterfly Effect is a real thing, and I don’t think our government does too good of a job realizing it.

For those unfamiliar, the Butterfly Effect postulates that a small thing happening here (say, a butterfly flapping its wings) can have a large effect on something way the hell over there (say, the creation of a hurricane that wipes out a Pacific island.

Grandpa Joe is considering a gas tax holiday, which sounds wonderful after traveling five hours by car yesterday. Yet the obvious problem is that the federal gas tax pays for things like road improvements, and even a short tax holiday will create billions of dollars of unfilled potholes (and other such transportation-related issues). And if you’re a “humans-can-save-the-planet-from-mass-extinctions” person (I am not), lower gas prices encourage more people to drive, which means more stuff in our atmosphere that Mother Earth really doesn’t like.

The last time a gas tax holiday became a possibility, then-President Obama called it a gimmick and more than 300 economists signed a letter stating what an awful idea it was. It’s cool to me when leaders from the same party are on opposite sides of the same issue because it leaves the possibility that the two will settle their differences inside a barbed-wire steel cage at the next Wrestlemania. Dare to dream.

Imbalances in the supply/demand curve are already creating enough issues out there (See: housing prices, car prices, egg prices … ). It’s always a good thing to look at the butterfly effect before pushing for something that appeals to our desire to alleviate our current fears and anxieties.

There are many things cool about solo traveling into the wilderness. One of those cool things is that there are essentially no rules. Grill a steak at 10 a.m.? Sure! Grab all the pillows off all the beds and hidden in a closet to create a pillow oasis in bed? Go for it! Walk around without clothes inside the cabin and when you’re wandering around the property? Naked Time!

I have stayed in many cabins over my life. It’s kind of my thing … getting away from all humanity and noise for a few days. Every single cabin I’ve ever stayed in has one thing in common: taco seasoning. It’s as if there’s some government program that mails a free packet of it to everyone who slaps some boards together in the wilderness.

So sure of this fact am I that, before I even unpacked the car upon arrival at my temporary home, I went into the kitchen and started opening the cabinets. Sure enough, the third cabinet I opened had a packet of taco seasoning.
