The song in my head when I woke up: “Life Goes On,” by Ed Sheeran. I am not an Ed Sheeran fan, but a few of his songs really hit my heart sometimes, and apparently they worm their way into my morning brain.

Favorite line from the song in my head when I woke up: I miss the flames, the heated reserve/I remember the way that you put me first

Commute Tunes: Songs from John’s Ultimate Chill Song Compendium:

Something I’m looking forward to today: A chiropractor appointment.

Something I’m looking forward to in the next seven days: Boy The Elder’s rehearsal dinner is tomorrow!

Something I’m grateful for from yesterday: My time on the deck with Boy The Elder.

What I’m writing: Yesterday’s Two Crappy Pages involves the start of a story about the challenges of insuring professional athletes.

What I’ve written: Democracy and Newspapers

Over the years, Boy The Elder and I have had some great father-son outings. They started when he was very young. The first big one I remember was when I took him to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to the museum there, where he totally dug sitting in some of the war planes.

Yesterday, I invited him to a different outing — an Ask Me Anything About Marriage hangout on our back deck — whiskey and cigars included. The cigars were Rocky Patel seventh anniversary. The whiskey was Henry McKenna single barrel bottled-in-bond, barreled on 2/24/14 from barrel No. 16004. Both were great.

The conversation was free-flowing. It was a beautiful night, and by the time we settled in, the stupid cicadas had STFU for the evening. We drank. We smoked. We watched baseball. We talked about the upcoming wedding, the dreams he’s been having about showing up to the venue without his suit, without the rings. We talked about old memories from him growing up. We talked about his friends, his finances, his future.

I gave him the gift I got him for his wedding, a laser-engraved whiskey decanter set. In the box, I put a long note I wrote him that I told him to read when he had some time.

It was a good time. It wasn’t lost on me that there are a number of scenarios that could have played out in which I wouldn’t have been around for that moment to happen. I’m grateful that I am.
