THE DAILY UPDATE

Three Things I’m Grateful For Today:

  1. A weekend of no baseball to get some things done around the house.
  2. Cooler weather. Mid-50s? I’ll take it.
  3. Finally making a decision on a really challenging problem.

Pursuit of Wordle Godhood: Today’s result: THREE. That’s two treys in a row, y’all.

The song in my head when I woke up: “Dead Don’t Die” by Shinedown.

Favorite line from the song in my head when I woke up: Life’s killed me a hundred thousand times/You can try, you can try, but the dead don’t die

Commute Tunes: No commute today. But my drive to my massage therapy appointment yesterday was to Pearl Jam’s new album, Dark Matter, released on the same day Travis Kelce’s girlfriend sang some new songs or something.

Something I’m looking forward to today: Doing some yard work.

Something I’m looking forward to in the next seven days: A big interview on Wednesday that’s hopefully the last step to the first step to a new future.

Something I’m grateful for from yesterday: A massage for my ailing back/neck.

What I’m writing: Yesterday’s Two Crappy Pages involved a lot of journaling to get to the end of a long process of figuring shit out.

What I’ve written: Right Place, Challenging Times: Barbara Burnette discusses how the EMDC program helped put her in a position to relieve overtaxed medical personnel during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s Stoic Though of the Day: If only the hearts of the wealthy were open to all!” — Seneca

John’s translation of Today’s STD: “Those who chase wealth as the foundation for doing good seldom do the good they could do with their wealth. What’s good? Wisdom. Self-control. Justice. Courage. Chase these instead, dumbass.”

Three weeks from today, Boy The Elder graduates college. Six weeks from tomorrow, he is getting married. When did all this happen? When did he grow up? What was I doing while he went from the boy wearing a “Little Guy” T-shirt on the day I wore my “Big Guy” T-shirt? How did it come to pass that he went from riding on my back as I played Daddy Bull to preparing to walk not one but two aisles?

The days are, indeed, long, but the years are short as fuck, and suddenly I have on my hands a mature, professional, ready-for-the-world soon-to-be 22-year-old (that event happens two weeks from today) who has found himself a great young woman with whom to make a life.

And why is his baby brother following so damn closely in his footsteps? Tonight, he’s going to a high school dance. He’s almost done with his freshman year. Wasn’t he just almost bursting into this world while I drove literally 100 mph to the hospital with his mom hee-hee-haaaaaaing in the front seat next to me? Where did this uber-kind, compassionate, animal-loving 14-year-old come from who looks so damn much like me while his skinny frame stands on a pitching mound it’s frightening? And when did he steal the exact same sense of humor I have and hilariously weaponize it against me like a little punk?

To quote noted 20th century philosopher Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t step and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
