No. 5: I pledged to finish something
I am a writer. If I’m going to be a writer, I should probably write, right? And that’s usually not a problem for me. What is a problem for me is finishing stuff I start writing. So I’ve pledged to not be distracted and start any other short story until I finish the one I’m working on right now. So far so good. I’ve got about 20 pages of pretty good writing, I think.
No. 4: Chainsawed and burned stuff
I spent Saturday morning cleaning up under a cedar tree I’d trimmed over the summer and then cutting up a bunch of fallen trees in the woods-line. I love chainsaws. I also burned a whole bunch of boxes and brush, because that’s what we do in rural Missourah.
No. 3: Gave my wife chill time
For Christmas last year, I gave Wifey Poo a coupon that would leave her home alone for an entire day. She’s constantly on the go and largely with Boy The Younger most days as his homeschool teacher and mom. Sunday, I took BTY and we went and did our thing while she got to do whatever it was she wanted to do. I think that’s a pretty good husband thing to do.
No. 2: Bonded with my boy
I understand the notion of quality time. I happen to think quality time without quantity time isn’t necessarily good dadding. Boy The Younger needs his dad. That means a fully present, healthy dad who puts in the time to meet him where he is and to share his interests. So Sunday, when he and I got out of Wifey Poo’s hair, we did BTY stuff — going to the zoo, to a thrift store, to eat good food, to watch football, to play baseball. I felt like a pretty good dad at the end of the day.
No. 1: Didn’t go blind
After my right eye went from fully functioning to a blurry mess over the course of two hours on Monday morning, I saw four different doctors in five days and am now on the mend from a nasty eye infection that, apparently, could have damaged my eyesight permanently. Here’s to sight!
