Overnight storms made for a restless night, as waves of rain and thunder rolled through our section of Missourah. Flash flood warnings pinged my phone sometime in the middle of the night, and by the time I left for my drive to work, eastbound I-70 was shut down to autos but, on the bright side, would have been super cool for canoes.

I understand the goal behind the push for us humans to be more climate conscious. Yet to think any combination of recycling, renewable power sources, electric vehicles and butt-plugs for methane-emitting cows is going to stop this planet from wiping us out is to overestimate the importance and power of human beings. Mother Earth has wiped the slate clean five previous times, all before anything even remotely resembling us came to be. Most sciencey smart people think we’re already in the midst of the sixth great extinction, defined as the end of at least 75% of the existing species, and this one began long before we started screwing things up with greenhouse gas emissions and rampant consumerism.

Mornings like this remind me that the most powerful force we’ve got shockingly isn’t a toddler’s screams in the cereal aisle but rather is Mother Nature’s ability to gen up some really nasty stuff whenever she gets her panties in a bunch.

Speaking of human delusions, I love hearing people talk about how advanced we are technologically, as if we’ve somehow reached the pinnacle of innovation. Historically speaking, each generation tends to think of itself as the apex of development, yet there you have it, really smart people like Sir Isaac Newton believing women got pregnant from things in pond water.

I say that because I have spent the better part of two days battling tech issues at work. Relatively speaking, they aren’t bad tech issues, but they sure as hell are annoying. Making a video on a new product to unclog drain lines shouldn’t be marked by two-hour expeditions to simply find a way to transfer footage from camera to computer, a half-dozen random crashes, the inability to access this file over there and enough angst to boil water.

If this is as good as it gets, it really ain’t that good.

It was less than six months ago when Boy The Younger and I sat down and had a serious conversation about his need to step up and start running his own life just a tad more. This isn’t meant to portray BTY as a bad kid. He’s absolutely not. He simply has his father’s genes that make it impossible for him to be anything other than blissfully unaware of his surroundings and responsibilities.

Last night, I came home from work to find BTY in the homeschool room putting together a desk — and not an easy-to-assemble desk, I must add. This one is essentially a double-desk with a divider in the middle with a space on one side for his mom/teacher and the other side for him. Being BTY, he, of course, had every part, nut, bolt and screw lined up in alphabetical and numerical order, and before 9 p.m., the entire thing was assembled.

The most stunning thing about this was that, when the box arrived in the late afternoon, evidently BTY volunteered to do this job.

Which begs the question: Is that boy really my son?
