Welcome to Songs of Significance, chronicling the songs that have helped shape me and people across generations.
So Far Away, Staind, from the 2003 album, 14 Shades of Grey
Line of Significance
Now that we’re here it’s so far away/And I feel like I can face the day, and I can forgive/And I’m not ashamed to be the person that I am today
So many songs in the grunge and post-grunge/alternative movement focus heavily on the current sucky state of life. That pretty much defines the genre. Staind moved beyond that with this song. It’s about accepting the mistakes of the past, acknowledging them and finally moving on to start liking the person who’s been born from the struggles. I love it because it doesn’t downplay the significance of what’s happened and doesn’t put the blame for those struggles on anyone else. It’s a song of hope, that despite all that was, what is and will be just might be different.
B. Goode is by no means a music critic and has zippo in the way of actual music theory education. He is simply a fan of music who grew up in Seattle and loves delving into the significance of songs.
