List Item Achieved! #47 ‘If You’re Good At Something’

As I’ve previously detailed elsewhere on my site, I have a bit of a Dark Knight problem. It’s kinda like I have a bit of a Shawshank Redemption problem, a Jewel problem and, currently, an Amy Lee/Evanescence problem. I watch or hear something that speaks to my soul, and it becomes an area of intense focus — sometimes for a few weeks, sometimes for years and years and years, going on to forever.

I love the scene in Dark Knight in which the Joker confronts the den of thieves. At one point, he says this:

For many years, I did what I was good at for free. I can write, design, photograph, record, edit, create websites, etc., better than the average bear. And if a friend or family member needed something, well, I did it.

Sometimes, those for whom I did work would pay me on the back end. Rarely. While I appreciated their thank-yous, the problem is similar to why I left my job at Shriners Hospital — thank-yous don’t pay the bills.

So I created a little side business and called it IMIG Marketing, a full-service, one-man shop that can do just about anything you need done. Need a website? I can do that. Need a flyer? I can do that. Business cards? Yup. A company logo? Gotcha. Photos? Indeed. How about a slick video with your vacation photos? I’m here. Want me to ghost write your book? That’s my wheelhouse.

And so I created a going rate and then steeply discounted it for friends and family. So far, no one has been pissed off that I actually charge for my work like a plumber or electrician or politician would do.

But for Jenni? Well, for Jenni I would have worked for free. Jenni is kinda sorta my boss. We’re not a hierarchical business, so whom exactly I report to is a bit ambiguous and changes from time-to-time, but it really doesn’t matter because we are all about getting shit done.

When she asked me if I would help her by making some 8.5-by-11 signs that would be hung on the hotel room doors of the players on her son’s soccer team for a tournament in Kansas City, I instinctively said “Sure thing!” because I’m helpful like that, know my work is appreciated and, yeah, because she da boss.

When she offered to pay me? Well, who am I to say “no.” So I officially landed my first side gig of the year, making these for each player on the team.

Moral of the story? If you’re good at something, never do it for free. But do cut your friends and family some slack and give them a discount.
