List Item Achieved! #40: Cheers!

I have a complicated history with alcohol.

So stupid and naive was I that I it wasn’t until I was 8 years old that I learned a woman could drink beer. I mean, I actually believed beer was not something women were allowed to drink, or maybe it was that I thought that if they drank it they would sprout a second head or something.

This isn’t to suggest my parents were teetotalers (they weren’t) or that I grew up in a sheltered environment (I kinda did). I just didn’t know that women drank beer. I still have never seen my mother or father take even a sip of beer. They enjoyed the occasional glass of wine while I was growing up — that’s it.

A close relative, on the other hand, had a problem with alcohol — something I was completely unaware was even a thing until I was — here we go again — 8. Then there was an incident after a meal at a country club in Houston, Texas, and all of a sudden alcohol was the big nasty evil thing that caused grownups to argue.

My own journey with alcohol began far too young but was pretty benign as far as teenagers go, owing mostly to the fact that I will avoid throwing up at all costs. Moderation has always been possible and a reality with me, though not always the chosen route. The world of an extreme empath is often very loud, and finding constructive ways to turn down the volume can prove elusive.

Recently, I’ve discovered I like bourbon.

There’s a vast difference in tastes in bourbon. It’s not that expensive bourbons taste great and inexpensive bourbons don’t. There are some great-tasting inexpensive bourbons, and I imagine if I could afford the really good stuff I would find some I don’t particularly like. Prior to this week, I had never bought myself a good bottle of bourbon. So I perused the interwebs for “The Best Bourbons of 2021” and “The Best Bourbons of 2022” and discovered, as with most things in These Unprecedented Times, there are as many opinions of what should be on the Top 10 lists as there are people willing to share them.

One name that popped up on several and didn’t require me to take out a loan was Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon. In tracking down this attractive bottle, I discovered the glory of Total Wines & More, the “& more” being “just about any kind of alcohol you could possibly imagine.” I popped in on my way home from work, quickly located my target bourbon and strutted out feeling slightly more sophisticated and adult than I did walking in.

It remains unopened and waiting for just the right time for me to enjoy a glass.
