Work Drinkin’ – Sept. 3, 2021

I’ll Drink to That

Since my departure from newspapers in 2009, I’ve worked for very conservative not-for-profit organizations. An electric cooperative. A Lutheran benefits provider. A pediatric orthopedic hospital. None ever encouraged me to post photos on our social media of employees drinking during the workday. But that happened to me today following our champagne-tasting lunch at my new job. Big Bossman was deciding between two varieties to use as celebration gifts for our happy clients in 2022, and he asked for staff input. We were more than happy to oblige. We ended up going with the lighter, fruitier one for spring and summer, and the crisper, drier one for fall and winter. And yes, there were a lot of tired eyes at workstations in the afternoon hours.

Work Perk

Speaking of the job, I realized yesterday there are some benefits to working for one of the leading real estate teams in St. Louis. Just after I wrote yesterday about my air conditioning being out and the need for an electrician, Bosslady saw my post on Facebook and sprung into action. She asked my colleague, T, to work her contacts and see if she could get someone to come out to my house — that evening. Less than an hour later, a friendly electrician named Cotton rang my doorbell and soon after told me I was missing a leg. Looking down and realizing I most definitely was not missing a leg, I kindly asked what the hell he was talking about. He explained to me that electricity is brought to a house on two 120-volt lines called legs. One of my home’s legs had crapped out. Cotton gave me a new leg, and it wasn’t long before I heard that comforting hum of the air conditioner again. Other jobs I’ve worked have had good perks — free branded clothing, discounted gym memberships and such; On-demand 24/7 electricians? Nice.

Oopsie Undies

I’m not sure how your work day started out, but mine began with me realizing I put my underwear on backwards. Yeah. That happened.

Today’s Reasons to Keep Living
